The Oeiras Piano Competition (OPC) is internationally recognized as a premier showcase of exceptional musical talent and cultural diversity. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the OPC proceeded with appropriate safety measures in place. This prestigious competition, held in the beautiful seaside city of Oeiras, Portugal, took place from June 21st to June 23rd at the Ruy de Carvalho Auditorium in Carnaxide. The competition attracted a large and diverse audience from near and far, all eager to witness the exceptional performances. The OPC featured an impressive lineup of young pianists from around the world who captivated audiences with their remarkable skills and artistry. From classical masterpieces to contemporary works, the repertoire demonstrated the breadth and depth of the pianists’ abilities.

Oeiras itself is a charming city that offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty and rich cultural heritage. In addition to the competition, visitors can enjoy Oeiras’ many attractions, including its beaches, museums, and cultural events. Its stunning gardens, historic landmarks, and breathtaking ocean views create a serene and inspiring backdrop for the competition. The city’s rich history is reflected in its architecture and landmarks, from the Baroque-style Palácio Marquês de Pombal to the imposing Fort of São Julião da Barra. Visitors have the opportunity to savor the city’s delicious cuisine, explore its vibrant cultural scene, and appreciate the warm hospitality of its residents. The competition was overseen by a distinguished panel of judges led by renowned musician Pedro Burmester and including esteemed figures such as Tiago Nunes (OPC Director), Jill Lawson, Rem Urasin, Pedro Emanuel Pereira, Ana Valente, and Pedro Borges. The judges’ comments and feedback were invaluable to the competitors in their growth as musicians and exemplified the spirit of mentorship and collaboration that the OPC seeks to cultivate. Their collective expertise and dedication to the art of piano playing ensured rigorous and impartial evaluations of all participants, creating a challenging yet supportive environment that encouraged each competitor to excel. Additionally, the judges themselves performed in a concert during the competition, further showcasing their own artistry and expertise.

The OPC’s program was carefully crafted to challenge and inspire pianists of varying skill levels and ages, with single-round categories ranging from A1 (up to 7 years old) to C (up to 15 years old), and two-round categories including D (up to 18 years old) and E (up to 32 years old). The selection of pieces was thoughtfully curated to challenge and inspire each participant and to showcase the diversity of piano music across different periods and styles. Each category featured an array of pieces designed to showcase the participants’ technical proficiency and expressive range, with generous awards given to recognize outstanding talent in each category. The top prize-winners, in particular, demonstrated not only exceptional technical skill but also a deep sense of musical interpretation and expression.

The success of the OPC is largely due to the collective support of its generous sponsors and dedicated organizers. The organizers were tireless in their efforts to ensure a successful and memorable event for all involved, from the participants to the audience members. Local businesses, cultural institutions, and international sponsors have played a crucial role in funding and promoting the event, ensuring its growth and sustainability. The support of sponsors and patrons was crucial in enabling the OPC to continue its tradition of excellence and cultural exchange. The OPC continues to inspire and elevate aspiring musicians from around the globe, serving as a remarkable celebration of musical excellence and cultural exchange.
