The 11th edition of the ClaviCologne International Piano Festival, for the first time in its esteemed history, graced the picturesque city of Pescara, Italy. Nestled between the azure Adriatic coast and the dramatic Apennine mountains, Pescara provided a stunning backdrop for an event that celebrates musical brilliance, cultural exchange, and the nurturing of young talent.
From July 30th to August 7th, the Luisa D’Annunzio State Conservatory of Music became a hub of artistic activity. The conservatory, with its rich heritage and modern facilities, offered an ideal setting for the festival’s extensive program of masterclasses, performances, and competitions. Participants and visitors alike were treated not only to the highest caliber of piano instruction and performance but also to the enchanting allure of Pescara’s historical charm, cultural richness, and culinary delights.
This year’s festival once again fulfilled its mission of promoting and supporting young pianists from around the globe. Through intensive masterclasses conducted by some of the world’s most distinguished musicians, participants had the opportunity to refine their technique and deepen their interpretive skills. The list of faculty members was impressive, featuring luminaries such as Epifanio Comis, Pavel Gililov, Cyprien Katsaris, Pietro De Maria, Peter Donohoe, Giuliano Mazzoccante, Leonardo Pierdomenico, Denis Kozhukhin, and Stepan Simonian. Each of these maestros brought their unique insights and expertise, making the learning experience exceptionally rich and diverse.
The competitive spirit of the festival was highlighted by three days of rigorous performances, culminating in the announcement of the prize winners. Yuki Amako emerged as the First Prize winner, with Denny Costantini and Julia Stephan securing second and third places, respectively. These talented pianists were evaluated by a dedicated and discerning jury panel comprising Alan Chircop (Malta), Epifanio Comis (Italy), Roberta De Nicola (Italy), Pavel Gililov (Austria), and Stepan Simonian (Germany). The panel’s commitment to recognizing true artistry ensured that the most deserving musicians were celebrated.
Artistic Director Giuliano Mazzoccante, whose vision and leadership continue to propel the festival to new heights, expressed heartfelt congratulations to the winners and profound gratitude to the jury and faculty members. The culmination of the festival saw joyous scenes as participants received their certificates at the final ceremony, a moment that encapsulated the spirit of achievement and camaraderie fostered throughout the event.
A special highlight was the masterclass conducted by Denis Kozhukhin, the festival’s esteemed Special Guest Professor. Held within the conservatory’s splendid halls, Kozhukhin’s session was a testament to the festival’s commitment to providing unparalleled educational experiences. His guidance and mentorship were invaluable to the young pianists, many of whom left inspired and eager to continue their musical journeys.
The 2024 ClaviCologne International Piano Festival was a resounding success, thanks to the dedication of all involved—students, teachers, jurors, and organizers. The festival not only showcased extraordinary musical talent but also highlighted the beauty and cultural wealth of Pescara.
